City Council
veto's reduction to Park Police Service
On March 25, 2009, the plan to reduce Winnipeg's park
police service was rejected on the floor of council.
Back in December, the Public Works Department notified the Union of its
plan to reorganize the park-police service including a reduction to the
current staff compliment from fourteen to seven.
Since mid-December, members of the Park Police have been actively involved
in a campaign to stop the budget reductions and retain the current operation.
"We are pleased that this service will remain status quo," said Mike Davidson, President of CUPE Local 500. "The Winnipeg Park Police have served the citizens of Winnipeg since 1897 and provide an important and essential function in our major parks. Our members in the Park Police Service have worked hard over the past three months on this campaign and deserve much of the credit for helping to keep this service in tact."
The Winnipeg Park Police is a division
of the Public Works Department and is the third largest Municipal police
service in Manitoba.
