Media Release: CUPE 500 members vote 87% to reject City of Winnipeg’s offer and authorize strike action

February 18, 2011 at 2:31 PM

Winnipeg – Today, members of CUPE Local 500 representing about 5,000 City of Winnipeg employees voted 87 % to strike if necessary to win a fair contract.

“Clearly, this is an indication to the employer that what they’ve presented to the membership is insufficient,” says Mike Davidson, CUPE Local President.  “They deserve better in this round of bargaining and are prepared to fight for it.”

Davidson said the Union believes a settlement is achievable and remains committed to returning to the table.

“The next step is for the committee to return to the bargaining table and reach a fair and reasonable agreement,” says Davidson.  “However if this doesn’t happen, the negotiating committee will have the option of setting a strike date.”

The current collective agreement between CUPE Local 500 and the City of Winnipeg expired December 31, 2010.
