CUPE Local 500 > News/Media > News Archive > Policy Grievance - Mandatory 3.5 Day of Unpaid Leave

The Local has received a response from the employer to our policy grievance regarding the mandatory 3.5 days of unpaid leave.  Please be advised that the City of Winnipeg has officially denied the policy grievance and we have begun the process of determining our next steps in the process.

“Our Lawyer and National Servicing Representatives are strategizing on the best possible approach for a positive resolution to this issue,” said Local 500 President, Mike Davidson.  “We remain committed to do everything possible to enforce the collective agreement and protect the rights of our members."

Background

In February 2014, CUPE was informed that City Council had directed the city administration to implement a reduction in working hours between Christmas and New Year’s Day, 2014. Furthermore, the City has directed Departments to not permit employees to book vacation between December 24 and December 31, 2014.  In March 2014, Local 500 filed a policy grievance objecting to the proposed implementation of a mandatory 3.5 days of unpaid leave for its members.  It is also the Union’s position that the City has violated the vacation clause of the collective agreement.  On April 22, a grievance meeting was held with representatives of Local 500 and the City of Winnipeg.  In May 2014, the employer denied the grievance.
