Since 2006, Public Works employee Christie Bachynski has been leading a Christmas hamper collection to help make the holiday season a little brighter for families in need.

This year, two families from two different organizations were the recipients of hampers filled with food and gifts. In addition, each family also received a turkey and all the trimmings for a perfect Christmas dinner.

"With monetary donations of close to $1,200 along with all the donated food and gift items, we were able to provide the families with extra food to last beyond the holiday season," said Christie Bachynski.

Christie says delivering one of the hampers and meeting the family really had an impact on her.

"One of our families was a mom with seven children and a grandbaby," said Christie. "It was such a great feeling to see the joy on the mom's face. She was very grateful for everything."

Christie says she is thankful to the volunteers from the department who help coordinate the effort which includes shopping, sorting, wrapping, boxing and delivering.

"This is a very worthy and worthwhile cause that the employees of the Public Works Department are happy to be part of every year," she said. Our goal is simple - to make Christmas magical for these families."
