CUPE Local 500/City of Winnipeg - Bargaining Update #29 Important Notice: Registration for Picket Duty

September 19, 2022 at 5:19 PM

As reported in our last update, we are continuing to prepare for the possibility of strike action. This update will address the registration process for picket duty. Please note that the City does not allow time off for employees to register for picket duty. You should try to register before or after your shift or during break periods. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Do members vote again to go on strike?

No. The strike vote already happened and gave a mandate to the Bargaining Committee of 93%. There is not a second vote to strike.

Why do I need to register?

In order to receive strike pay, Local 500 members need to register for picket duty. If you are unable to picket, other types of work will be available.

What if I can’t picket?

Strike Pay

In order to receive strike pay, you must participate in picket duties. Picket duties are paid work that members engage in for the duration of a strike including picketing, administration tasks, serving on a strike committee, etc.

Please fill out your strike pay form here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This form is for strike pay and accommodation requests ONLY. You must register in person for picket duties.

Picked Captains Wanted

There will be a Picket Captain table set-up where existing Picket Captains can choose their preferred picket shifts and locations.

The strike committee is looking for more volunteers to serve as picket captain. Training will be provided. You can sign up here or contact the Local 500 office at union@cupe500.mb.ca or sign up at during picket duty registration.
