CUPE Manitoba convention on-guard against contracting out and privatization

About 230 delegates, observers and guests attended the 46th Annual CUPE Manitoba Convention held in Dauphin April 30 – May 2.

Delegates to the convention strongly endorsed a number of resolutions and participated in some good discussions about workplace violence, workload issues and contracting out and privatization.

CUPE National President Paul Moist praised Manitoba for its strong activism and hard work in making the union a strong voice for members and urged delegates to continue their fight against the challenges of privatization.

Other speakers included the Honourable Kerri Irvin-Ross, Minister of Healthy Living, Kevin Rebeck, CUPE Manitoba President, Darlene Darlene Dziewit, President, Manitoba Federation of Labour, Claude Généreux, CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer and Antonio Tinio, National Chairperson, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, of the Philippines.

This year’s Jack Rodie award was presented to Charlie Morrison of Local 110.

Kevin Rebeck was re-elected as President and CUPE Manitoba’s nominee for General Vice-President and Gale Morton was re-elected Secretary-Treasurer. CUPE Local 500 President Mike Davidson was elected as CUPE Manitoba’s nominee for Regional Vice-President and Kelly Moist, Local 1063 was elected Winnipeg Area Representative. Marian Sawyer of Local 2509 was elected Trustee for a three-year term.
