Local 500 mourns the passing of Brother Clive Derham

Local 500 is sad to announce the passing of Honourary Life Member Brother Clive Derham on April 25, 2019. 

Clive commenced service with the City of Winnipeg, Waterworks Department, on June 7, 1965.  He was promoted through the ranks and at the time of his retirement from CUPE in 2002, appeared on the seniority list as a Waterworks Foreman.

He became active in the Local 500 Water Distribution and Sewer Services Unit, serving as Unit President.  He served on many rounds of Local 500 negotiations and on the Local’s Executive, he was 2nd Vice-President in 1974.  Prior to service on the Local’s Executive, Clive served as a Local 500 Trustee for a number of terms.

On February 11, 1974 he commenced work as a CUPE National Staff Representative.  He was initially assigned to service Local 500 and later in his career became CUPE’s Health Care Coordinator and Chief Negotiator for this large sector of the membership.  Clive served health care workers in large city hospitals such as HSC and many rural unit’s scattered throughout the province.  He was a respected staff member by all local’s he serviced.

Clive became active in CUPE’s Staff Union, the Canadian Staff Union (CSU) and served for many years as Secretary-Treasurer of the CSU.  He was well respected by both his Manitoba staff colleagues and indeed by CUPE staff across the country.  He retired on March 1, 2002.

Clive was inducted into membership as a Local 500 Honourary Life Member in 1990.  

He will be deeply missed by his many friends within the labour movement.
