Member Update #12 - COVID-19

September 09, 2020 at 2:38 PM

As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for our members and our union.

It has changed the way we are able to conduct union business both with the employer and our members. Some of these changes include limiting in-person contact by meeting via telephone or virtually. However, as more of the province began to re-open and public health restrictions were relaxed, we felt it was important to schedule and hold the August meeting of Central Council. This provided an opportunity to pass an important motion that gives the Executive the authority to continue to conduct business during the time of the pandemic. Please note that the Local’s Executive has continued to meet virtually to handle ongoing matters.

Unfortunately, as we continue to see a rise in cases within Manitoba and across the country, we will base any future decisions on returning to union activities and meetings through informed public health orders and our National Union. Our primary focus is on services to our members and everyone’s health and safety.

As you are aware, the City of Winnipeg has implemented a new mask policy. This policy requires masks be worn by all employees and visitors to city facilities and in city vehicles, including transit. Your union is in support of the move for mask requirements to help ensure your health and safety at work.

We all have a collective responsibility in limiting the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, it is imperative that in addition to wearing your mask, please remember to continue practicing social distancing, proper hand washing and most importantly, stay home if you are sick.

While COVID-19 remains a threat and its impact will be felt for quite some time, it's important that we continue to work together to protect our rights and ensure all members are being treated fairly and with respect. We know that public services are critical to building strong and healthy communities so we will be doing everything we can to ensure you keep doing your vital work.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us by calling the Local 500 office at 204-942-1001 or by email at union@cupe500.mb.ca. You can also contact your shop steward or member of your unit executive.

As always, stay safe and look out for each other.
