October is Canadian Library Month!

During this most challenging of years, we’re reminded of the important role that library workers play in keeping our communities connected.

"We recognize the vital role our library members play in enhancing the quality of life in our community each and every day, all year long,” said Local 500 President Gord Delbridge. As we mark Canadian Library Month, I want to thank our members for helping to keep our libraries working especially during these turbulent times.”

In March, libraries across the country shut their doors to the public in response to COVID-19. Many CUPE library workers were temporarily laid off or redeployed while others were told to work from home. Libraries have since reopened, many with limited services.

But despite the interruption, library workers have stepped up and shifted their programming model to reach beyond their physical buildings. Initiatives such as expanded availability of online learning and electronic media, development of virtual programming, and the introduction of curbside pickup allowed the community to stay informed and have access the critical information they required in the quickly evolving environment.

Library workers deliver quality programs and services that are at the heart of the community. Yet library workers face challenges that negatively impact service delivery including reduced funding, program and service cuts, reduced staffing levels, increased workloads, and precarious work.

To respond to these threats, CUPE invites all library workers to participate in the "We Bring Your Library to Life" visibility campaign during October.
