THE LOCAL 500 LES BUTTERWORTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND is inviting applications for its scholarship and bursary awards.
This year the fund is offering:
- One scholarship of $2,000
- Three bursaries of $1,000 each
The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the bursaries on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.
Eligibility:
The competition is open to Local 500 members in good standing and their families (family is defined as spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings, and children in-law. Also eligible are families of disabled, retired or deceased members who were members in good standing at the time of their disability, retirement or death).
The awards are available for use in an accredited post-secondary school, college or university within Manitoba for the 2024-2025 academic year. (Awards can only be used at Canadian schools outside Manitoba when the course of studies is not offered in Manitoba).
To be eligible for an award, applicants must elect a full year's study or the year 2024-2025. Applicants who have completed one semester or more at a post-secondary school, college or university, may also apply.
Note: Previous award winners are not eligible, but previous applicants may re-apply.
Method of selection:
A selection committee of three prominent Winnipeg citizens will review the applications and other information provided.

2016/2017 Scholarship and Bursary Winners

This year, one scholarship of $1,500 and four bursaries of $800 were awarded at a dinner held on September 29th at the RBC Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Scholarship Winner
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and went to Elaine Herrera. Elaine is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department. Elaine is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba.
Bursary Winners
The bursaries are awarded on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.
Here are the bursary award winners for 2016:
Ketan Bansal is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba. He is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department.
Bekelu Negash is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg. She is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department.
Maria Sytnick is enrolled in University 1 at the Université de Saint-Boniface. She is a Local 500 member working in the Library Services Division of the Community Services Development.
Brian Tran is enrolled in the Engineering Department – Construction Management Program at Red River College. His sister Brenda is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department who accepted the award on his behalf.
2015/2016 Scholarship and Bursary Winners
Scholarship Winner
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and went to Luke Boguski. Luke's father Darrell is a Local 500 member working at the Transcona Library in the Community Services Department. Luke is enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering - Aerospace Structures at Carleton University.
Bursary Winners
The bursaries are awarded on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.
Here are the bursary award winners for 2015:
Michelle Friesen is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg. Her father Scott is a Local 500 member working at the RBC Convention Centre.
Atley Durette is enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba. He is a Local 500 member working in the Golf Services Division of the Planning, Property and Development Department.

Four students have won awards from the Les Butterworth Scholarship Fund sponsored by CUPE Local 500.
One scholarship of $1,250 and three bursaries of $750 were awarded.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement. This year’s scholarship recipient is Karen Thiessen. Karen is a Local 500 member working at the Millennium Library in the Community Services Department. She is enrolled in the Library and Information Technology Program at Red River College.
The bursaries are awarded on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.

Quentin Robb is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba. He is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department – Aquatics Division.
Marisa Thompson is enrolled in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Manitoba. Her father Randy is a Local 500 member working in the Water and Wastewater Services at the City of Winnipeg.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement. This year’s scholarship recipient is Michael Grossi who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science, Honours Degree – Chemistry Program at the University of Winnipeg. Michael is a Local 500 member working in the Recreation and Leisure Services Division at the City of Winnipeg.
The bursaries are awarded on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.
Here are the bursary award winners for 2013:
Nicole Sheedy is enrolled in the Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences, Pre-Veterinary Studies at the University of Manitoba. Her mom Deborah is a Local 500 member working in the Library Services Division of the Community Services Department.
Erika Manaigre is enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba. Erika is a Local 500 member working in the Recreation and Leisure Services Division at the City of Winnipeg.
Allen Chalanchuk is enrolled in the Occupational Health and Safety Program at Red River Community College. He is a Local 500 member working in Golf Services at the City of Winnipeg.

The Les Butterworth Scholarship Fund awards sponsored by Local 500 were presented to the award winners at a dinner held on September 20, 2012. One scholarship of $1,250 and three bursaries of $750 were awarded.
The scholarship, which is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, went to Helene Morakis. Helene is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg. She is a Local 500 member in the Community Services Department.
The bursaries were awarded for high marks and financial need. The winners were:
Alan Chorney is enrolled in the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University. He is a Local 500 member in the Community Services Department.
Michael Gallagher is enrolled in the Faculty of Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg. He is a Local 500 member in the Public Works Department.
Matyas Toth is enrolled in Animal Health Technology at Red River College. His mother Heather is a Local 500 member in the Corporate Services Department.

The Les Butterworth Scholarship Fund awards sponsored by Local 500 were presented to the award winners at a dinner held on September 15, 2011. One scholarship of $1,250 and three bursaries of $750 were awarded.
The scholarship, which is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, went to Adam Reisacher. Adam is enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba. His partner Lorraine is a Local 500 member in the Community Services Department.
The bursaries were awarded for high marks and financial need. The winners were:
Kevin Bairos-Novak is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba. He is a Local 500 member in the Water and Waste Department.
Courtney Brecht is taking Creative Communications at Red River Community College. She is a Local 500 member in the Assessment and Taxation Department.
