CUPE QUESTIONS FUNDING REQUEST FOR ‘ACCELERATED’ ALTERNATE SERVICE DELIVERY (ASD) PROCESS

WINNIPEG – This Wednesday, the City of Winnipeg’s Executive Policy Committee will consider a motion from the Finance Committee to set aside funds in the operating budget for an accelerated Alternate Service Delivery process.

The union representing municipal workers at the City of Winnipeg is questioning why such a motion is going forward without any background information or what ‘accelerated’ means.
“This motion should raise alarm bells for other members of Council and the citizens of Winnipeg,” said Mike Davison, President of CUPE Local 500.  “Where is the background information or report that indicates what exactly will be accelerated or rushed?”

Davidson says the Union will attend the City’s Executive Policy Committee meeting to get more information about the motion but is disappointed in the lack of details.

“The ASD process is not one that should be rushed into lightly,” said Davidson.   “We saw what happened with the ASD process that sold off our gravel pit and put our solid waste collection services into private hands.”

CUPE Local 500 represents about 5,000 employees working at the City of Winnipeg who provide front-line services in the areas of public works, parks, golf courses, water and wastewater, recreation, custodial and other services.
