The Les Butterworth Scholarship and Bursary Program is an annual event sponsored by CUPE Local 500.  The fund helps union members and their families defray the cost of higher education. 

This year, one scholarship of $1,500 and four bursaries of $800 were awarded at a dinner held on September 29 at the RBC Winnipeg Convention Centre. 

Scholarship Winner

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and went to Elaine Herrera.  Elaine is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department.  Elaine is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba.

Bursary Winners

The bursaries are awarded on the basis of good academic standing with consideration of financial need.

Here are the bursary award winners for 2016:

Ketan Bansal is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba.  He is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department.

Bekelu Negash is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg.  She is a Local 500 member working in the Community Development and Recreation Services Division of the Community Services Department.

Maria Sytnick is enrolled in University 1 at the Université de Saint-Boniface. She is a Local 500 member working in the Library Services Division of the Community Services Development.

Brian Tran is enrolled in the Engineering Department – Construction Management Program at Red River College. His sister Brenda is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department.
