Congratulations to Local 500 honourary life member Sister Shirley Lord on being recognized for her outstanding contributions to progressive movements at the CCPA Errol Black Chair in Labour Issues virtual brunch. The virtual event took place on Sunday, November 8.
Sister Lord was active in CUPE and the labour movement for decades. While working at the Winnipeg municipal hospitals (now Riverview Health Centre), she served on the Local 500 executive, was chair of the CUPE Manitoba and Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) Political Action Committees and worked at the CUPE Manitoba Regional Office. Additionally, Shirley was an Executive member of the Winnipeg Labour Council and MFL.
Shirley also served as President of the Manitoba NDP, and was the coordinator of CHO!CES, a coalition for social justice. Shirley was also deeply committed to global justice, doing important work in Kampala, Uganda and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Sister Lord can always be seen in the back rooms of political campaigns, and has been key in many, many victories for the working class.
Words cannot express our gratitude for her years of dedication and commitment to CUPE and to the labour movement.
Congratulations once again on this well deserved honour!
