Cancellation of Shifts/Cuts to Library Hours - Millennium Library
May 07, 2018 at 3:33 PM
Greetings:
Over the course of the past couple of weeks, the Union has been made aware that some temporary and part-tine staff at the Millennium Library have had their hours cut due to the Winnipeg whiteout street parties.
I want to assure you that your Union is looking into this matter and I would ask that you give us a bit of time to work on a resolve regarding this issue.
Why is this happening?
As you are aware, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey team are in the playoffs. To support their fans and the team, the City of Winnipeg and a number of other organizations decided to plan whiteout street parties. This has meant, due to safety and security reasons, the Millennium Library has had to close early during the Whiteout party events. And with the team advancing further into the playoffs, more street parties will continue to be held.
Will the Union be filing a grievance?
Unfortunately, there is no language in the collective agreement, or in any letter of understanding or under provincial legislation (i.e. employment standards) to protect these hours of work. However, we know that our members need and depend on these hours to help earn a living income. That’s why your Union has been reaching out to City officials to see what can be done to make up for these lost shifts.
This issue has also attracted some media attention and we are hopeful that along with public support, we can work together with city officials to resolve this matter.
Your National Staff Representative Jeff Van Wyk, is working closely with the Community Services Unit Executive to keep you informed as we continue to represent your interests. Please continue to send your questions and concerns to them or email the Local 500 office at union@cupe500.mb.ca.
We appreciate your patience and support as we work towards a solution.
In closing, I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to the citizens we serve. Our libraries are a vital part of our community and the services you provide enrich the lives of many in our city each and every day.
In solidarity,
Gord Delbridge
CUPE Local 500 President
