APRIL 28 IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING

The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those workers who have lost their lives, were injured or became ill in the workplace.

It’s been 36 years since CUPE’s National Health and Safety Committee first proposed the idea of creating a day of remembrance for workers killed or injured on the job. This year the National Day of Mourning will be recognized in close to 100 countries around the world and can truly be called the International Day of Mourning.

Since 1978, Local 500 has lost sixteen members to a workplace accident or illness. And sadly, this year, three civic employees have died as a result of
a work-related illness.

Our union regrets every injury and every life lost on the job.

As we remember and honour the lives lost, we must also think about the thousands in our civic workforce, healthcare workers, grocery store, and many other essential workers who are on the frontlines of this current crisis.

Their dedication and efforts to keeping our community safe and running are beyond measure.

On this year’s day of mourning, we must continue our collective resolve to making the workplace safer for everyone.

And on this day, we encourage all workers to keep health and safety a priority both at work and at home.

Let’s all do our part so that today is not a day another worker dies on the job.

Day of Mourning Ceremonies/Events:

Due to the impacts of Covid-19, this year's Day of Mourning events will be changed to online and virtual ceremonies.

All Local 500 members are encouraged to join one or all of the following to help pay tribute to fallen and injured workers.
