Member Update #20 - Covid-19 - Government Vaccination Requirements
August 27, 2021 at 4:27 PM
As you may be aware, the Province of Manitoba recently announced that many public sector employees who have ongoing contact with vulnerable populations, especially children, must be fully vaccinated by October 31 and provide proof of vaccination. These employees include health-care providers and workers, educational workers, child-care workers and correctional officers.
Workers and their unions must be consulted on this new directive, and CUPE will be working with governments and employers on the many important details of its implementation.
We do know that workers who are not able to get vaccinated for medical or religious reasons will need to provide documentation to their employer, and that employees who are not fully vaccinated will have to submit to testing up to three times per week and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
CUPE has always encouraged our members to get vaccinated at their earliest opportunity, for the protection of ourselves, our coworkers, and the patients and clients we care for. Everyone who can, should get vaccinated against COVID-19.
At the time of this writing, the City of Winnipeg is reviewing the provincial policy but has not yet announced a plan to implement a mandatory workplace vaccination procedure for municipal employees.
The Local will continue to update members if there is a change or amendment to any new or existing regulations regarding COVID-19.
