Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the women and men who serve as public safety telecommunicators. These are the people who take your phone calls when you call 9-1-1 to ensure proper emergency resources are deployed.
“Local 500 members who work for the City of Winnipeg as emergency communication operators, are essential to public safety,” said Local 500 President, Mike Davidson. “I’m pleased to see that their contributions and commitment to public safety are being recognized and I commend our members for their dedicated efforts day in and day out.”
On April 11 and 12, the Fire Paramedic Services are setting up a display at Polo Park and will have CUPE 911 communication staff on site from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.
“We know the important role our members play in keeping our community safe and we hope you join us in celebrating their efforts by dropping by Polo Park on April 11 and 12,” said Davidson.
The City of Winnipeg has two emergency communications call centres. One centre is used by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) and the other is used by Winnipeg Police Service (WPS). CUPE represents members working at the WFPS call centre.
