On September 21, the City’s Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works granted a second extension for the City’s snow clearing review.

On February 10, the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works approved a motion to conduct an in-depth review of the City’s snow clearing services, with particular focus on a cost and quality comparison between private contractors and city-run snow clearing services.  The report was to be released in June, however, the Public Works Department was not ready, and was given until September for completion.  It is now expected that the report will be tabled in November.

“We’re disappointed that the City’s report is still not ready,” said Local 500 President, Mike Davidson.  “The Union is fully prepared and ready to present our findings in this regard, but I guess we’ll have to wait until their report is complete.”

On February 23, Local 500 launched a snow plowing hotline and website aimed at collecting stories from Winnipeggers about their experiences with snow plowing in our city.

On June 23, during the Public Works Committee meeting, Local 500 President, Mike Davidson presented a summary of the Local’s Public Plowing Works report calling for contracted-out snow clearing to be brought back in-house. You can read the report summary on our website at cupe500.mb.ca.

The Local’s full report will be provided at the same time as the City’s snow clearing review.

We will update the membership as more information becomes available.
