CUPE 500 "NO CUTS" CAMPAIGN - Support growing against city budget cuts!
February 13, 2020 at 6:05 PM
With the City's Preliminary budget set to be made public on March 6, CUPE 500 continues to take a strong stance against the wide-sweeping cuts being considered in the City's multi-year budget process.
"City Councillors are deliberating on cuts that would leave our community wounded for years to come," said Gord Delbridge, President of CUPE Local 500. "The cuts being proposed affect every corner of our city, and we will not accept any cuts that hurt our public and community services."
The CUPE 500 "No Cuts" campaign is in full swing and includes
radio, billboards, digital, and social media ads that directs the public to yourwinnipeg.ca, where an online petition and details of the cuts can be found.
"There are many community groups also raising their concerns about the cuts, and CUPE 500 will be doing whatever we can to support those groups as well," said Delbridge. "The entire community is mobilizing against the City's proposed cuts and closures, and I hope City Councillors listen to all our voices in the weeks to come".
Staff morale at all-time low
The City's multi-year budget process has already impacted the workforce, with many city staff worrying about the future of their jobs and the services they deliver to the community.
"Staff morale at the City is at an all-time low," said Delbridge. "City staff care deeply about the services they provide, whether a librarian at Westwood Library, or the call centre staff at 311, this budget process has had them fear for their work since November. It is really unfair for staff".
What you can do
Petitions:
Sign the online Petition against cuts and closures to pools, libraries, arenas, and recreation facilities and share the petition with your friends, family and co-workers. We also encourage you to print out hard copies of the petition and circulate in your workplace and at events in your community. The petition is a great tool to have conversations with people and engage them in the campaign. It is also a way of demonstrating the numbers of supporters we have, so we want to be getting lots of signatures.

Local 500 is planning an action event from March 2 - 6 leading up to the release of the budget. We'll need your help to win this fight. Please watch for more details about this action event and other activities that you can help support..
