“After much thought and discussion with my family, I have decided that I will not stand for re-election as Local 500 President,” said Davidson. “I know that our union will continue to be a strong voice for Winnipeg’s municipal workers, and will continue to work with, and hold accountable, our city’s decision makers to build a better Winnipeg for everyone.”

Davidson has served five terms as Local 500 President and holds the position of Vice-President of CUPE Manitoba and Regional Vice-President for Manitoba on the CUPE National Executive Board.  He previously served on the executive of the Winnipeg Labour Council and is active in the federal and provincial New Democratic Party.

“It has been an honour and privilege to serve as Local 500 President and work full-time on behalf of the membership,” said Davidson.  “I thank the members, executive, activists and staff for all their hard work and positive support provided to me over the years.”

Davidson has been a CUPE member for 36 years, starting out as a parks worker at the City of Winnipeg in 1979.

Local 500 represents about 6,000 members who work at the City of Winnipeg, Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg Humane Society, RBC Convention Centre, St. Boniface Museum, Assiniboine Park Conservancy, Emterra Environmental, Commissionaires (RCMP) Division, RM of East St. Paul, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and a number of community centre arenas.

The Local 500 election of officers, including the President, will take place on November 23.
