CUPE Local 500/City of Winnipeg Negotiations Update

December 02, 2010 at 10:46 PM

The Union and the City have exchanged proposals in the negotiations of a new contract. The two parties met on November 29, 30 and December 1 to review and discuss the proposals. We want to make sure we have a mutual understanding of what the proposals mean and why we are requesting them.

The Union and the City have exchanged proposals in the negotiations of a new contract. The two parties met on November 29, 30 and December 1 to review and discuss the proposals. We want to make sure we have a mutual understanding of what the proposals mean and why we are requesting them.

The proposals developed by the Union’s Negotiating Committee are based on the membership priorities identified in the bargaining survey conducted in May of this year.

At this point in bargaining, we can report that the City’s proposal package contains a number of concessions. Concessions are requests by an Employer to give up rights we previously fought for and gained in bargaining. We have seen concessions tabled in the past and are optimistic that progress will continue and we will secure a fair and reasonable agreement.

Proposals Available

Copies of the Union’s proposals for contract changes are available from the Local 500 office. You can drop by the office at 702 – 275 Broadway. Copies of the proposals are for members of CUPE Local 500 and are not distributed or copied for anyone else.

Bargaining to continue in January

Negotiations between the City of Winnipeg and CUPE Local 500 will begin again in January. While the Local has a good track record of achieving results, it can never be guaranteed that job action will not be needed. It is important to hope for the best, but plan for the worst. In view of this, you may want to put off any discretionary spending, just in case.

Rumours

The rumour mill will be hard at work. Please do not believe anything you hear unless it comes from the Union. If you have a concern or question, contact the Local 500 office directly. Ignore the rumours and get the facts.

Watch for more information

From now and until we reach a tentative agreement, we’ll be sending out regular communications. Please check your bulletin board for bargaining updates.
