CUPE Local 500/City of Winnipeg - Bargaining Update #18
June 07, 2022 at 3:46 PM
Negotiations between CUPE Local 500 and the City of Winnipeg continued on Monday, May 30.
During our session, your bargaining committee was expecting a response to the union’s last counter wage proposal, but instead the employer informed us that they could not respond at this time. As we indicated in our last update, the employer’s initial wage offer fell well below our expectations. We believe that the union has presented a reasonable counter offer that meets your priorities.
Your bargaining committee has been crystal clear that we need to see a drastic improvement to the employer’s monetary offer. At this point, we are waiting for a response from the employer.
Our next bargaining dates are June 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23.
We have been advised that the City will be presenting a response on June 15. Based on their offer your bargaining committee will then make a decision as to our next steps. This may include ramping up our pressure on the employer by asking you to stand in support of a strike mandate. A strong strike vote gives the union's negotiating committee permission to take job action if necessary.
Wages, job security/contracting out, benefit improvements and sick/vacation days are the top priorities in this round of negotiations.
Your bargaining committee remains dedicated to representing you at the negotiating table and keeping you updated on our progress. You deserve a fair and reasonable contract, and we’ll be counting on your support over the weeks ahead to fight for the issues that are important to you.
