The International Day of Pink is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop bullying, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia.
The Day of Pink started in 2007 at a Nova Scotia high school after a young student was being bullied, for among other things, wearing a pink-shirt. Two weeks later, and in a sign of solidarity, four students decided to buy over 200 shirts for distribution at the school, one of which was given to the bully.
Bullying is a serious problem in our workplaces, our schools and our community. It’s an aggressive, persistent form of harassment that hurts people of all ages, stemming from a misuse of power to make someone else feel small and insignificant. The ripple effects of bullying can extend to witnesses, friends, families, co-workers and even to entire organizations.
We all know that we are strongest when we stand together against bullying, against unfairness and against inequality. By wearing pink, we challenge harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ2 people, and show solidarity with survivors.
