The Les Butterworth Scholarship Fund, sponsored by Local 500, presented four awards this year at a dinner held on September 26, 2019. One scholarship of $1,500 and three bursaries of $1,000 were awarded.

The scholarship, which is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, went to Emmit Hameed. Emmit is enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg. He is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department.

The bursaries are awarded for high marks and financial need. The winners are:

Braden Bristow is enrolled in University 1 at the University of Manitoba.  His father is a Local 500 member working at the Water and Waste Department.

Natalie Linklater is enrolled in University 1 at the University of Manitoba.  She is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department.

Monika Pichor is enrolled in the Social Innovation & Community Development Program at Red River Community College.  She is a Local 500 member working in the Community Services Department.

The Local would like to thank American Income Life for their generous contribution and support of the fund over the past number of years.

The annual awards competition is open to Local 500 members and their families. Applications are available in mid-April and the competition closes at the end of June.

The scholarship was set up in 1980 in memory of Les Butterworth, a past CUPE education representative who had a strong belief in the value of education.

Congratulations to our scholarship and bursary award winners, and many thanks to everyone who applied to the program this year!
