New radio ad celebrates 50 years of building strong communities

October 01, 2013 at 3:45 PM

This year marks CUPE’s 50th anniversary. It was five decades ago, right her in Winnipeg, that two public sector unions, the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) and the National Union of Public Service Employees (NUPSE), merged together to create the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

A total of 480 delegates and 236 guests attended the founding convention held in the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. The merger was the result of over four years of discussions initiated by the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). CUPE had about 60,000 members as our union was founded.

Today, through the efforts of countless activists and staff, our union has grown to 630,000 members covered by about 3,800 collective agreements.

Over the years, CUPE has fought for and achieved better wages, benefits and pensions for our members. We have fought for stronger communities and a better world.

In celebration of our union's 50th Anniversary, Local 500 has launched a new radio ad that will run throughout the month of October.
