November 20th – Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 18, 2017 at 9:34 PM
The Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed each year on November 20 in memory of transgender persons who have lost their lives because of anti-trans violence. Started in 1998 to honour the murder of a young transgender woman in Massachusetts, the day is now marked by ceremonies in cities across Canada and around the world.
Trans people are particularly vulnerable to harassment, exclusion and extreme violence on a daily basis, on and off the job.
It is our job as a union to stand up for all human rights and for dignity and security for all people. The struggle for respect for Trans people is part of that effort.
Let’s all continue to work together to help make our workplaces and communities a safe and inclusive space for those who identify as transgender.
