Dave Gaudreau, a Local 500 member, is working on behalf of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) to get support for its plan to fix the pension system.
The CLC plan has three main parts:
1. Increase the CPP benefit to pay 50% of pre-retirement income by slowly
increasing contributions over 7 years. This would give every Canadian a decent
income in retirement. It would apply to earnings in all jobs across the country.
2. Increase the guaranteed income supplement (GIS) immediately by 15%. This
would bring thousands of seniors out from under the poverty line and give them the
dignity they deserve.
3. Have the Federal government create national pension insurance much like the one
for bank accounts. This would stop companies from declaring bankruptcy and
destroying pension plans.
How can I help support this plan?
We need politicians to know that Canadians support this plan. The Ministers are meeting June 14th to decide what can be done to the CPP.
Talk to your family, friends and co-workers and spread the message and have them act on this issue too. This is important for every Canadian and the future of our children.
Here's what you and others can do...
- Call, email or write your Member of Parliament or Provincial MLA. Tell them you
support the CLC's position on phasing in the doubling of the CPP. Ask them to
support it.
- You can also go the CUPE Local 500 website and sign the petition to tell Stephen
Harper: It's time to fix Canada's pension crisis.
