Public Works Department Operational Review

August 31, 2012 at 1:32 PM

The operations in the Public Works Department are going to be closely examined to see if there are ways to improve operations and save money.  On August 9th, the City announced they issued a Request for Proposals for industry experts to review the Public Works Department to ensure the City makes "the most efficient and effective use of taxpayer's funds".

The City's plan is to award the contract in September, review the first set of findings in October, the second set of findings in November, and draft a final report and present recommendations to City Council's Executive Policy Committee in December.

"If the City wants to pass on savings to the citizens of Winnipeg, they should bring the residential garbage pick-up contract back in-house," said Local 500 President, Mike Davidson.  "With the costs of private contracted services increasing at a more rapid rate than internal costs of garbage collection, many Canadian cities have already contracted back in these services to gain savings," he said.

The Local will continue to monitor the review process and update the membership as information becomes available.
