Standing up for dignity and respect on the job: Local 500 files two policy grievances – City of Winnipeg

As part of our ongoing work to ensure the employer provides a healthy and respectful workplace for our members, Local 500
has filed two policy grievances to address what we feel are violations of our members’ human rights and dignity on the job.
The first of the two policy grievances gave rise from the union’s contention that the employer is acting in an unfair and
unreasonable manner by not providing employees with a fair and consistent, quick and thorough process for dealing with behaviours such as violence and threats in the workplace, discrimination, racism, harassment, rumours that damage a person’s reputation, disruptive workplace conflict and disrespectful behaviour.
The second policy grievance addresses the union’s contention that the employer is administering an unfair and unreasonable policy by not working in a cooperative and complimentary manner with the union to achieve optimum placement of employees requiring accommodation within a reasonable amount of time.
Members of Local 500 who work at the City of Winnipeg have provisions in their collective agreement against behaviours such as discrimination and harassment. Members also have the right to be accommodated and are further protected by human rights legislation.
In both instances, the rights of our members have been negatively impacted by the employer’s violation of the provisions in the collective agreement and letters of understanding.
