Water and Waste Department "White Cap" Tours

A series of Joint City/CUPE workplace meetings have been taking place in the Water and Waste Department to discuss the City's upcoming sewage treatment plant upgrades at the South and North End sewage treatment plants.

On May 19, 2010, City Council approved a multi-year contract with Veolia Canada to carry out the design and construction of the plant upgrades and expansion of the biosolids handling facility.

Local 500 has been campaigning steadily to keep the City's water and sewage treatment systems publicly owned, managed and operated since the City first proposed the creation of a municipal corporate utility model in November, 2008.

“The decision not to have a corporate ‘partner’ in the ownership of this municipal corporate utility should be seen as a victory, however, we continue to have concerns about a private corporation playing any role beyond the design/build stage - whether it be management or elsewhere in our City's sewage services,” said Local 500 President Mike Davidson. “CUPE Local 500's priority is protecting vital public services and the public interest and we will continue to monitor this project with those goals."

The Joint City/CUPE workplace meetings will continue until June 30
